Meet Wayan Adi Parta behind and on the frontline of PLM Import/Export.

Hi Everybody, thank you for visiting our websites. My name is I Wayan Adi Parta, and most of my friends call me Jung, which is the short form of my nickname Pujung. I was born in 1976 in Peliatan, near a famous tourist area in Ubud, Bali. I started my journey in the Bali tourism industry as a tourist driver in 1996 after graduating from senior high school. I never thought I would be involved in the silver jewelry industry because my area is not part of that industry. After all, Celuk is about 15 km from my village.

I met my US business partner in Ubud about a year later. As a driver, he hired me to take him to the Celuk area, picking up jewelry for his business in the USA. At that time, I enjoyed my job, and I started to know and get interested in silver jewelry as well, even though I was going with him that once in a while.

After that, he encouraged me to open a jewelry workshop and start hiring smiths and managers. In 1998, we started my jewelry company, Puri Lautan Mutiara, or PLM Import/ Export. Why is it import/ export? Sometimes, we need to import certain materials like stones and findings so we can make modern-standard jewelry. Back then, there were few suppliers in Bali selling that stuff.

I started that company because I already had the customer. But things did not always go as smoothly as I expected. Around 2016, after a decade, my primary customer went bankrupt and owed us some money. I then decided to downsize my company from about 45 employees to half of it. Then, we launched a few websites, one of them being jewelry.co.id, and opened a custom jewelry manufacturing service so we could get more clients.

Astungkara (in Balinese, which means thank god), our company can still be operated today. I am not saying we are growing, but at least we have survived. Too many factors, if I mentioned here, to make our company grow like it used to be. Typical customers that have been ordering with us are small businesses and, most of the time, just start-up businesses. Another factor is Bali silversmiths; there are not that many right now. So sometimes during high season, we have full orders until we can’t fulfill them on time because of the smith’s issues.

I think that is what I can tell you about myself. Even though I am not an expert, I am familiar with jewelry and Bali Craft productions and exporting. I have enough knowledge and experience in managing this industry since 1998. However, I was never satisfied with what I was capable of. I still want to learn many new things. By the way, a few other websites about the jewelry business that you might need to check are as follows:

I made a few because I didn’t know which one would work when I started it, and I liked to experiment with them. Please explore them and contact me if you have any ideas about developing a business in jewelry and handicrafts, especially Bali Jewelry and handicrafts.
